At least the last miserable toad of a gamekeeper had the decency to shoot
There is always the possibility that Will may take Poppy, and possibly
others, and himself, to live with mummy in heaven. He has the tools, is
well used to killing, and is complicit in Nic's crime.
And it happens.
He is just selfish and childish enough to decide she will not be
allowed to be happier with anyone else if he decides not to go on. He
wants the children to depend on him and is perhaps trying, one hopes
subconsciously, to infect them with his unhealthy obsession with Nic's
grave and absence. He wants them to join him in misery.
I think Umbrella is tired of it and wants to go to his real dad. Both
men were a bit quick to accept the story of Evil Emma. And the taunt
about only caring for money was unforgivable. He loved Nic's taunting
Emma about being worse off. It made up for Emma preferring Ed. And he
is too selfish or nasty to care if Emma is now losing money by looking
after all the kids. H'd never think of offering to pay her, or at
least being grateful.
