It probably was years ago but I think I remember you mentioning a
detective novel featuring an accountant.

Clark Smith's daughter has just lent me the three Nicky Mahoun
accountant detective stories that were published by Penguin in the 50s:
are these the novels you meant?

You have a very good memory! I think I may have been referring to "The
Bank Audit" by Bruce Marshall but I have been meaning to track down
Clark Smith's books since reading this academic paper about them, which
may be of interest yo his daughter:

Thank you! My other half may like those too. Do you know Emma Lathen?
Oldies but goodies about the cut-and-thrust of investment banking.

Nicky Mahoun is the protagonist: Clark Smith is the writer.

The books are:

The Speaking Eye, Penguin 1955 (1334)
The Deadly Reaper, Penguin 1956 (1605)
The Case of Torches, Penguin 1957 (1710)

Thank you!
But alas, neither abebooks nor Amazon know anything about him, except
for the text book he wrote. Will keep an eye out in the local secondhand
bookshops.
