I will try. Google Groups seems a very inelegant tool and I may miss things.

Nice to see you again, Martin. What have you been up to in all this time (seems like
yesterday, to be honest, but apparently was a lot longer)?

It is. Some of us make do with Newstap, which isn’t a patch on Turnpike
but can live with,

Hello, not dead yet!

Still up in the Pennines? Or have you narrowboated away to somewhere
else these days?

Good to see you again, wherever you are google-groping from.

Google groups _is_ a bad tool; can you not use, well, _anything_ else?
UMRA is carried by I think both free and the very cheap news server, as
well as the others. Thunderbird's reasonably well supported; plenty of
others too.

Free ones include eternalseptember.org of which I have heard, over the
years, good things.

The one I use is news.individual.net (which used to be the Berlin
University server CIS.DFN.DE) until it got so popular that they had to
introduce a nominal Ꞓ10 fee to pay administrative staff. It has been Ꞓ10
for years now and the service (text only) is PDG at filtering spam.

I couldn't quite work out how to reply to specific comments.
Most of the existing threads seem to have large numbers of posts which I don't have the spirit to wade through at the moment. I'll try to join in but there's this newfangled thing called Facebook that seems to have captured me, and I am in so many groups there. It has pretty pictures, too.

The pictures of some of us here wouldn't be pretty anyway. You really
don't want those. And Seeing Tony on Midsommer Murders last night
showed me you don't want to see some of the pictures that go with the
voices on TA

:) Exactly my thinking when everyone goes up in arms about privacy. The
only effect someone else having my "data" can have on me is to serve me
ads, but since I have very effective ad-blockers - including on FB - I
don't see them anyway. I suppose there's some vulnerability to financial
attack, but I have my security tied down pretty well there as well, so
if they did get thru 2sv somehow, I'm guessing I'd get a refund...

Sincerely Chris
