I ordered a plant from Thompson & Morgan and they sent me an e-mail to

I've had parcels delivered by both Hermes and Whistl in the past. Why
is this one being handled by 2 different carriers?

IRTA you ordered a planet, and was very impressed with these Thompson
and Morgan people. I've had experience with Hermes in the past, not
always of the good kind. Whistl is a name I've heard, but they perhaps
don't come this far West.

Likewise. I nearly wrote "Hermes (spit!)" in my earlier post, but

My local Hermes chap is brilliant - and related to the woman two doors down
which may explain why he has no trouble finding my house. However, he is
sometimes on holiday and his replacement is absolutely hopeless - couldn't
find a post code if it bit him.

Well, if you will use a post coded address; might be better if you
decrypted it for them, OY! Bletchley, there’s a little job for you over

Hermes, shudder. We had some not very savoury neighbours. They made Eddee
look positively *clean*. For some time they delivered for Hermes. Their
idea of packing was to Chuck the parcels on the driveway before ramming it
into a hatchback. Eventually they were done for ….. *growing cannabis*.
Even then the chief offender assured the Plods he no speak English so trial
delayed till one was found. Fortunately the whole household moved out and
the house (more akin to something falling down was sold for a ridiculous
sum, on account of a ginormous extension to someone equally probably just
this side of the law but on the whole doesn’t inflict dubious bits of
building work on us or generally made one wonder what’s going on that
shouldn’t.

IRTA you ordered a planet, and was very impressed with these Thompson

If it's coming by Hermes, presumably the planet is Mercury.

Also, do we all remember the Falklands era joke?:

Doctor, doctor, I think I've got Hermes.

You mean you've got herpes.

No, I'm just a carrier.

I've never heard of it, but can think of two possible explanations:

1. They're co-operating - either due to staff shortages (due to CoViD or
not), or just how the parcel-load has distributed today/tomorrow; or

2. They're the same company under the skin?

I guess it's a bit like remote areas with two petrol stations of
different brands where they both use the same fuel delivery tanker. IOW
co-operation but not in the altruistic sense.

I don't know the answer, but communications from Hermes have gone over
the top.

A couple of days ago I got an email from them to say they were expecting
to receive a package for delivery to me.
Then another saying they'd now got the package.
Another to say they'd let me know when they were about to deliver.
Another to say it was out for delivery.
Finally one to say they had delivered it.

TMI.

I take it they had delivered it to the correct address? In the last couple
of months, the facebook page for the Kent village where I used to live has
been full of messages asking 'who has got my parcel?' or 'whose parcel have
I got?'. The photo of the doorstep with parcel by it they were sent could
have been anywhere but their own.

Yes, but even in a small village not everyone knows everyone else by name
or the name of all houses.

Hermes claim to take a photo of the parcel in an open doorway to prove
it was delivered. When my plants were delivered (by Hermes) to-day the
driver rang my doorbell and by the time I got to it and opened it he was
already on his way back to his van. My previous delivery by Hermes was
a bag of dog food which I never received. The photo which was supposed
to prove it had been delivered showed the parcel and a tiny area of red
brick which may or may not have been the wall by my front door. (If the
driver rang my doorbell I didn't hear it - could have been in the garden.)

I had something similar. I had a text from Parcel Force telling me
they'd tried to deliver a package, but there was no-one in. There was,
it was me. There was a tracking number with the text, but when I went on
their website it turned out to be invalid. There were details on the
card the courier had put through my door, which must have been one of
those invisible ones, because we couldn't see it. However, they would
try again the next day, which is their standard proceedure. They didn't.
The Royal Mail had attempted to deliver the item a couple of days
before, which was news to me. I still don't know what it was, I wasn't
expecting anything.

Sounds like an incomplete attempt at the scam where they go on to explain
an excess postage charge is due…

Possibly a scam because there are a number of scams around Parcel Farce. I
almost fell for one when I was expecting a book and it had gone past its
Amazon due delivery. It was a second hand book. Fortunately I decided it
must be a scam. But it shows how easy it is to get sucked in when one is
expecting a parcel and is very keen to get it no matter what.

Ah, Amazon....the fun of sitting on my front step, watching the App....6 stops,
4 stops, 2 stops, it's been delivered! Yes, I'm still sitting there and nothing's
been delivered. Luckily, it's normally in the flats' area round the back, but it's
still boodily annoying!
