I think part of how despairing Alice feels is that she thinks she
drove and caused the crash and Fallon lost the baby. She was drinking
before but now has that guilt. I think if George can be shown to have
been driving it will help and might jar her enough to stop drinking.

Her self belief can only be helped once she knows that she was not
driving at all - I think the loss of a partially unwanted foetus is not
the centre of her concerns - that is Harrison's problem. (And George's).

I feel that outlook is a little too utilitarian even for Alice. For a
start, the foetus was not "partially unwanted" it would have been very
much wanted by the father, had he known about it at the time and may
be very much missed by him now. Also - and this may or may not be to
do with the hormonal and other changes in women when they become
pregnant - I cannot think of any woman I have known who has not been
affected by the loss of a foetus, wanted or otherwise and I have just
consulted with the management, sitting in the chair next to mine, and
she can't think of any examples either.

"Partially unwanted" was intended to cover the split between Fallon
(whom we have not heard speak about the loss) and Harrison (we are
pregnant as if he was royalty). I entirely accept that even Fallon may
be feeling some sense of loss - but she does not want to talk about Wren
or similar at all - I am not sure she has yet accepted she was pregnant.
