This is a bit random. I will be in Clermont-Ferrand briefly later in
the year. Is it possible (using public transport) to get to the top of
Puy de Dome from the city centre and back in time to catch a lunchtime
departure from the station or will I have to use taxis. The bus times
imply it might be possible but there is only one train a day so the
departure time is fixed.

Inevitably encumbered by a very heavy suitcase etc.

Sorry I can't help, but have been there, over 40 years ago, when
stopping nearby in the caravan.

We drove up, and the views were splendid. There was a hang glider
assembled ready to go, but the chap did not launch whilst we were
watching.

The road up (which replaced a rack railway) is now closed to the public
who now have to use a shiny new rack railway. There's a huge car park at
the departure station but I've no idea about public transport.

Clermont-Ferrand, being the home of Michelin, has pneumatic tyred pseudo
trams instead of the real sort recently installed in many French cities.
They were out of action for repairs when I was there in 2013.
