can't the SWs do basic research?

AIUI Mia is off to university, Newcastle University, this weekend. A
quick Google shows that Freshers' Week for Newcastle doesn't start until
the 16th September.

Perhaps she's not going to Newcastle but to Northumbria (a university
which narrowly avoided transitioning from Newcastle Polytechnic to the
Central University of Newcastle on Tyne), but no, their Freshers don't
start until a week later.

Bah, Humbug!

I seem to recall that my university terms commenced around the end of
September with an initial week (?) getting settled and lectures running
from early October. But that was over 50 years ago.

I think lots of students go up early. For a start, if she's not in
university accommodation (and from what she's taking it doesn't sounds
as if she is), then the student accommodation is probably let from the
beginning of September.

She might also want to do a bit of sightseeing. Or spend some time
walking along the beaches of Tyneside thinking of Lakey Hill

I thought she and Brad had been "going up Lakey Hill" for some time now.

When I went to university, in my hall there was a very confident, relaxed,
thoughtful, kind fellow who seemed to know everything about our institution of
learning, all of the people, and all of the places. I was amazed to find that
he was a first year, just like me. He'd arranged to arrive fully two weeks
early. When I asked him about it, he said he just wanted to get settled and
work it out. I thought that was briliant. He's still a confident, relaxed,
thoughtful and kind fellow, and I'm very lucky to have him as a friend.

What an excellent idea and I'm delighted about the friendship.

That reason for going up early was third on my list.

No.1 She's a Grundy albeit a nice Grundy so wouldn't she want to GTFOO
Ambridge as quickly as possible?
No.2 She's a Grundy and the niceness is just a front for her other
activities. If TS Eliot were writing for the Beeb he might describe
her as the Josephine of Crime. She's going up early to scope the place
out and to set up a few marks. Essential activities if she is to become
the Irene Adler of Newcastle.

Some begin in Sept, yes. I’m seeing several young people going now/last
week. It’s the newer universities.
