Three times in the last few hours I have been scared out of my few
remaining wits by my (i)Phone blaring out one of these alerts.

My wife said "Just acknowledge the alert and it will stop happening."

Alas I cannot.
The _bilingual_ message is longer that the box in which it appears, and
I cannot scroll down to read the rest (it might have an exciting plot
twist in the last few lines, but I will never know).

So, if these is supposed to be a button at the end of the text I can
never see or press it.

Anyone else have this problem?

Nothing here from either iPhones or iPads. My iMac stays quietly until I
wake it up from sleep mode.

I might not have them switched on of course. Certainly McTs devices are
silent which suggests we’ve not asked for them. Alexa’s quite enough!

You wouldn't have had an alert, Chris, as I don't think Reading is in
the red alert area. Those of us who are in areas which are merely
yellow aren't getting alert messages. Sam is in Wales, where the
weather is far wilder than anything you or I are getting.

Having read the article today, you’re right, Serena.

I would have said it isn't _too_ wild in this particular portion of
Wales, but a neighbour pointed out that there is a 6 inch-thick section
of a branch speared through the roof of our shed.

The shed looks quite normal from our house, you have to go down to it
(it's in the opposite corner of the garden) and around the other side to
see the damage.

It is an old shed, under a very large ash tree, and it has had similar
experiences in the past. We don't keep anything too vulnerable or vital
in it, mostly firewood.

I presume then that this was just a sentient piece of firewood trying to
save you the bother of stacking it in the shed.

Kind of it, but I'll still have to extract it from the hole, cut it into
lengths & split it.
<Wanders off, humming "It all makes work for the working man to do">

At least it was a mere 6 inch diameter branch.
The last time the shed got hit, it was some really big stuff.

Hmm... Sentient firewood.

Sounds like you have just added some more firewood…. 😉

Get with the program, Grandad! If you were the sort of person who they
wanted to receive their alerts, you'd have the the right sort of mobile
phone - as specified by the 10-year-old programmers who designed the
app.

I don't get alerts on my GSM/2G dumb phone - I wonder why? Oh and one of
the reasons[1] I have dumped Amazon - at last - is because they keep
sending clickable links to my mobile as 2FA security checks on a phone
that neither clicks nor does links. And trying to copy them laboriously
into a browser when the phone uses the same characters to represent I
and 1 and O and 0 is no longer amusing.

Whilst I finally managed to get Wofe to have a 'smart' phone for exactly
this reason.
Every time she amended her Ocado shopping list the credit card lot would
insist on a 2FA code - sent to our landline - so she would have to
unwrap herself from all the blankets & shawls, cross the room to the
phone, try to here the robot voice read out the 6 digits (you had to
memorise it in one go - no repeats) then go back to the laptop and...
was that a 6 or an 8?
She now has a 'smart' Doro phone and, for the most part, gets on with it
fairly well.
