Some of it is attention span - the other night when Lilian was talking
to Chris in The Bull I was >< that close to complaining about not
knowing whose the male voice was (FAL is recognisable, of course) when
his name was dropped into the conversation. So they do give us the
hints, but perhaps not quite soon enough sometimes.

I don’t listen hard enough, Vicky, being hard of hearing is no excuse, but
my two visually impaired long listening friends struggled with the new cast
members the other evening.

I didn't enjoy her casual racism towards Kahlil at all. The way she was
speaking very
s l o w l y and enunciating very c l e a r l y, as if she assumed
he wouldn't understand English very well. She only regretted her
rudeness (I doubt she acknowledged the racism to herself) when she
realised they might be Adil's nephew and niece.

That was rather behind my comment - and IMO not something The Lynda We
Know and Love (TLWKAL) would have been prone to, on so many grounds. She
had Adil as a lodger for a long time so is accustomed to brown skinned
people, she is quick-witted enough to recognise Khalil's knowledge of
animals and while she might not appreciate being told she had missed a
problem with Salieri, I think she would have been open enough to
entertain the idea or at least take great pains to explain why it was
not the case <sniff>.

Agree to all that. But AIAOU? No-one seems to agree with me that Khalil
was actually very rude to her, entitled and challenging. And he lied. He
may not have been responsible for the Can That Shall Not Be Named
(though I wouldn't have put it past him to have bought it for himself in
defiance of the family embargo) but he said to his sister that he had
been eating crisps. So I can quite understand that confronted with such
confrontation (plus a little bit of subconscious bias, no doubt) Lyndy
wasn't her normal open self.

I don't think he was very rude. I've just listened again to the start of
the conversation where she immediately talks down to him and says a n i
m a l s, and he responds quite politely but angry about the racism and
being accused of doing something (feeding Salieri) that he wasn't.

It was only much later when he asked if her ears worked that it got a
bit rude, but completely understandable with Lindy's nonsense.

And it was nonsense, because she just wouldn't behave like that.

I liked thescenes with her and the children. She is often wrong and
thinks she's right but here realised she was wrong.
I didn't enjoy her casual racism towards Kahlil at all.  The way she
was speaking very
s l o w l y   and enunciating very  c l e a r l y,   as if she assumed
he wouldn't understand English very well.
A slippery customer Khalil. I can see some traits in Khalil that we’ve met
before. Now we have Adil’s sister and family settled in Beechwood, will he
also return? (Perhaps with a new Best Friend? We still have an unresolved
buyer of Willow Cottage for one. Where’s Kirstie going/gone? As Denise
was stopped from renting with Kirstie, where is she? Still with the now
ex?)

Where is Kirsty? Roy wanted to sell; Kirsty can afford to buy if she
sells the Beechwood property which would mean that Helen would be
homeless unless she bought it (both of which make sense to me).

I haven't bothered to relisten but the impression I had was that he was
reasonably polite initially, for the couple of seconds before Lynda gave
him both barrels. I don't think he lied about the crisps, he didn't
tell Lynda he wasn't eating them, only that he hadn't fed any to the
llama. I think that, on the whole, I quite like both Zainab and Kahlil
but it's clear that neither of them are exactly emollient characters.

Yes, I think that was a large part of it. I'm sure she'd have been a
lot slower to assume that an unfamiliar youth was an urban guttersnipe
if he'd been white. She'd have allowed for the fact that he could be a
nice middle-class lad and/or might live locally.

As a matter of interest, does anyrat regularly listen with headphones

in any conversation and even if maybe it helped in identifying them?

I've been away for a few days, so am just catching up here.

I kept caught up with the programme while I was away, on BBC sounds with
(good quality) stereo earbuds. At home I often listen with good stereo
headphones. There is no doubt that they are a help, but that (IMHO) does
not excuse poor writing.

Tuesday 8th - Azra tries to keep the peace, and Hannah finds herself in
a potentially embarrassing situation.
Wednesday 9th - It’s an emotional day for one family, and a bombshell is
dropped for Will.
Thursday 10th - It’s judgement day for George, while Fallon relives her
nightmare.
Friday 11th - Susan offers some advice, and debate rages at the Bull.
Monday and Friday...

Lynda? Thinks she may have gone too far? Really? This is the same Lynda,
no?

Susan "Remember what Bambi's mother said: if you can't say anything nice
it's better not to say anything at all."

Judge Hardwick eh? I wonder if he keeps a black cap handy for special
occasions?

Oh dear,,,

Poor George.

Do you suppose there might be enough left in the Grange Farm Fighting
Fund to send him a care package?

I thought maybe we could send him a Soap-On-A-Rope.

Precisely.

Though the real shock for me wasn't the thought that, thanks to the
shortage of prison places, poor boy George is going to be banged up with
big, burly, stubbly old lags in an adult prison but the trail after the
episode that Emma - no, not that Emma - is, starting today, launching an
All About The Archers podcast over on BBC Sounds. I'm aFreud I don't
like that idea one little bit and have to wonder if the plan is to
eventually push out Properly Presented (and therefore more expensive)
Programmes like Front Row.

Having mostly heard her on programmes like Loose Ends I rather thought
that she was the unpaid intern, doing the gig for the experience. But
go on, surprise me: when Gary Lineker gets booted off MotD, will Emma
Freud become the BBC's highest paid presenter?

For the avoidance of doubt, I don't think Clive "blimey, perhaps I
ought to have done some preparation for the show: never mind I'll
throw in a few weak, topical jokes at the start and I'm sure I'll get
away with it as usual" Anderson is any better.

Big, burly, stubbly old lags are one problem he shouldn't have to worry
about. Immediately after breaking it to him that he'd be sent to an
adult prison, his solicitor reassured George that he'd be in a wing with
only 18-25 year olds. That probably doesn't do much to reduce the need
to avoid bending over in the showers though!

I really ought to have concentrated a little more on the dialogue and a
little less on trying to make up soap jokes.

It's George's solicitor, Sharon Prince. Heaven alone knows why they
only listed her by her forename, when the other legal bods have surnames
but no forenames . Usha name-checked her, when Eddie was on at her to
represent George and said that she was well respected.

Yes of course - I remember that being mentioned - but whoever does the
cast list obviously did not know and in the script is presumably only
Sharon as the name had been given previously.
