We recently went to Bayreuth in Bavaria for a weekend to hear a modern
preformance of Tannhäuser. We had originally intended a fortnight in
Bavaria, but because our son is ill we cut it down to the weekend.

German trains vary a lot in how high and how far accross to step to get
onto the coaches.

And how high and far was the Venusberg?

My daughter and family have recently returned from a family Interrail
and reported that timekeeping in Germany was particularly bad.

One of our trains- Nuremberg to Munich - was replaced by two with a 55
minutes wait for the connection at Ingolstadt.

As you've obviously been concerned for your son's health for some time
now, I think it's really good that you've been able to step outside
that world and into another one if only for a few days. I hope things
for your son and for the whole family are as good as they can be.

Not only German trains. Thanks to reading about the Tanni
Grey-Thompson incident yesterday [1] I learned that level boarding of
trains was legislated for in the 1990s and intended to be introduced
by 2020. But the last government admitted that at current rates of
progress this target would take 100 years to reach.

PS: How was the Wagner?

All the right notes and in the right order, as far as I could tell
though it is the opera I am least fsmiliar with.

But very "clever" staging and effects.gr!vjass
