Post by Jenny M BensonPost by KosmoPost by Jim EasterbrookPost by Jenny M BensonThunderbird says no messages but I am inclined to disbelieve it.
I don't use Thunderbird for newsgroups and haven't seen anything here for
a day or more. Until now.
Eternal September was down again at some point (yesterday) I think and
so I decided that it was to blame not the lack of anyone writing anything.
But I do still use Thunderbird.
OK, I will accept that TB is not to blame for the Umratic silence, but I
am still fed up with the way it is behaving. Over and again I get a
message about being "unable to compact" because another operation is in
progress. Everytime I click on Umra to read the message the message
pane is empty and I have to click somewhere else and then try again to
see anything. Another newsgroup I thought had died because no messages
for months, then I used my laptop and dozens of messages were
downloaded. I found a button for repairing a news folder and that
informs me there are thousands of unread messages in a couple of
newsgroups but even though I say to download a few and mark the rest as
read it may or may not download any but still says there are the same
thousands unread. Then, of course, there's the even more serious matter
of TB losing all the messages from several folders, including archives
for about 3 years, from one of my accounts.
That sounds all rather nasty. I have also suffered the "unable to
compact" message and would suggest going offline (Under File menu),
rebooting the PC so the memory is pretty clean and then attempting the
compact step before going back on line.
Why reboot the PC - simply to kill any processes which are hanging around.
I think in general there is little or no development work being
undertaken on Thunderbird on newsfeeds so if a newsgroup gets in a
tangle then removing and re-installing the newsfeed is the only solution
because it is a problem - I have certainly had to re-install UMRA a
couple of times in the last year because it has "stopped working" -
which probably means the knickers are twisted or similar.
Sadly newsgroups are in decline as other social media has elbowed their
way through.
