Thunderbird says no messages but I am inclined to disbelieve it. I am
fed up with TB not behaving itself.

Eternal September was down again at some point (yesterday) I think and
so I decided that it was to blame not the lack of anyone writing anything.

But I do still use Thunderbird.

OK, I will accept that TB is not to blame for the Umratic silence, but I
am still fed up with the way it is behaving. Over and again I get a
message about being "unable to compact" because another operation is in
progress. Everytime I click on Umra to read the message the message
pane is empty and I have to click somewhere else and then try again to
see anything. Another newsgroup I thought had died because no messages
for months, then I used my laptop and dozens of messages were
downloaded. I found a button for repairing a news folder and that
informs me there are thousands of unread messages in a couple of
newsgroups but even though I say to download a few and mark the rest as
read it may or may not download any but still says there are the same
thousands unread. Then, of course, there's the even more serious matter
of TB losing all the messages from several folders, including archives
for about 3 years, from one of my accounts.

message about being "unable to compact" because another operation is in

That sounds all rather nasty. I have also suffered the "unable to
compact" message and would suggest going offline (Under File menu),
rebooting the PC so the memory is pretty clean and then attempting the
compact step before going back on line.

Why reboot the PC - simply to kill any processes which are hanging around.

I think in general there is little or no development work being
undertaken on Thunderbird on newsfeeds so if a newsgroup gets in a
tangle then removing and re-installing the newsfeed is the only solution
because it is a problem - I have certainly had to re-install UMRA a
couple of times in the last year because it has "stopped working" -
which probably means the knickers are twisted or similar.

Sadly newsgroups are in decline as other social media has elbowed their
way through.

Recently my newsreader shows only a short history from Eternal September
for some groups. Has it lost some old postings?

Can't comment on that as I only read umra and last time I did a
re-install it seemed to think that I should download a vast number but I
only asked for 500 - most of which I had read.

I'm still on 128.3.3esr but I see 4 is available. Anybody on 4? My
current problem is that TB is playing very badly with the AntiMalware
(Windoze own), freezing apparently when the antivirus is checking
incoming or outgoing messages. As for newsgroups, I only have umra and
keep the view to unread only (reading messages themselves in a new pane)
so haven't seen any problems. I dread to think what's going on in my
Local Folders, though...

128.3.2 here. I am running with 16Gb memory (have been for about 10
years) but utilisation of memory runs at very high percentages. I
wonder if the various resources have enough memory on your machine? I
am not experiencing those problems here but I know that my memory usage
(keeping too many browser windows open) just grows until I reboot.

I don't know whether it is still the case, but at one time minimising
open windows would free up some memory compared with leaving them at a
usable size.

I have very few open browser windows (according to me) - perhaps two on
Chrome and three or four on Firefox running concurrently. Come to think
of it, I haven't opened Firefox today at all and things have been
running suspiciously smoothly so far...

Is there any virus risk from Usenet text messages? I would have thought
they were fairly "passive" and need only minimal checking.

On the other hand, of course, binaries on Usenet can be distinctly
dodgy.

You may know that, and I may know that, but I very much doubt that the
software knows that. It will just see a stream of data arriving and
being saved so will throw everything it has at it to be on the safe side.

That sounds like it could be a problem with auntie virus getting her
underwear in a twist and using too much cpu. I would suggest checking
whether she has (or recently had) an update or whether there is a known
problem with your version.
