Permalinkheard and had enough of La Rochelle's dead-batting all Joy's attempts to
find out what's been going on in her life for the past x years and are
beginning to wonder if the scriptwriters know themselves yet, perhaps
umra could indulge in a little light speculation.
Here's what I think we know:
1 Joy and R0chelle have been estranged for some years
2 Rochelle has two sons currently with their father and his new partner
in Florida
3 It's not entirely clear if the sons live with Rochelle or not -
references to keeping up the visits would suggest not.
4. Joy has built an idealised version of Rochelle in the village (andin
her head). There is an uncomfortable untold truth.
Possible scenarios:
1. The boys live with their dad (or in long-term foster care) and
Rochelle has (ir)regular contact visits. The first could simply be the
result of a divorce settlement in which his ability to provide a home
for the boys was better trhan hers. Either could be the result of an
inability on Rochelle's part to provide a stable home for them.
2. Why would she not be able to give the boys a home? I'm going to
discount alcoholism on tw grounds - too recent a story with Alice and
Joy's lack of reaction (empathetic or not) to Alice's. The same could
hold true for drug addiction, though many people regard them as
different in kind, not just in degree. Incarceration in an institution
of one kind or another would fit the bill..
3. What institution? Prison (but the empathy argument is in play again)
might work. Or a mental health issue, which we haven't had for a while.
4. If prison, what did she do? At this point I ask if we know what
happened to her father. She could have served time for causing death by
dangerous driving, having caused an accident in which Joy's husband was
killed. Or some similar major family breaking action.
5. If it didn't involve the father parhaps the sons themselves. She
might have left them unattended at home on a regular basis and a
complaint to Social Services could have resulted in a Removal Order
and/or the father being granted residency.
I have a feeling the story will either be much more lurid than anything
here or entirely mundane, but cry havoc and let slip the dogs of umra.
