Today I went to London for a checkup on my implants

1. I booked a ticket from Bedford to London. I was allowed to travel on
the 9.04 Thameslink, but not the 9.11 EMR (although I could have got
that train if I had got off at Luton). What is the sense in that ?

2. I got a black cab at the rank at the side of St. Pancras. 20 minutes
later we passed the front of St. Pancras on Euston Rd which was jammed
solid ! When we got to the destination down FGray;s Inn Rd the meter
was showing £22.60, but the taxi driver took pity and said the traffic
was ridiculous and only charged me £15. Amazing !!!

3. Coming back after a successful checkup two very pleasant Asian
gentleman sat in my 6-seat bay. We got talking and it turned out that
one of them was a Bangladeshi Test cricketer who took the final wicket
catch at wicket keeper when they beat England for the first time in any
format !

It depends on the ticket but I assume it was an "Off Peak Day Return" or
variation thereof (with Travelcard or similar) and the restriction on
such OP DR dating back as long as I can remember (which means early 70's
for certain) is that one cannot arrive on a timetabled train prior to
1000 as it ensures availability of seats (huh!) for commuters. Scotland
recently attempted to abolish peak hour fares but the experiment failed
in that it did not convince enough people to change transport mode. The
shortfall in income was made good by the Scottish Government which can
afford such largesse. DfT London cannot. Peak hour travel is
recovering slowly and I gather from those forced to use it Tues / Wed /
Thur the loadings are higher than pre-covid because there are less trains.

That is amazing (not getting charged the full amount). Obviously I am
not sure where you were going but my personal experience of that road is
that the Mayor has removed two of the three lanes (one for buses and
taxis and one for bicycles) and in consequence the pollution levels are
extraordinarily high and (I suspect dangerous) as the cars are unable to
make any progress whatsoever and in consequence the entire flow does not
flow. I try to transit London on the Underground at all times.

The cab driver said it was much worse than normal but there was no
obvious cause. There was still a bus/taxi lane, but just couldn't turn
in to Euston Rd as it was blocked and several times the lights were
green and nobody moved because they would have been in yellow box.

I was travelling to Gray's Inn Rd. A tad too far to walk with my knee at
the moment and taking a tube would have been about the same anmount of
walking from another direction.

That was my immediate thought too....

Apparently one of the English batsmen [1] was injured so when they got
the 9th wicket they thought they'd won and he picked up one of the
stumps as a souvenir. The umpire told him to put it back and tha last
man came in with a big plaster cast on his foot. He was at the
non-strikers end and it was the last over and Eng. needed 9 or something
to win, but had to be all scored off boundaries. He survived a couple of
balls but then nicked one to my new friend for the win and so he did end
up with a stump. His joy and pride as he told this story was a pleasure
to see.

That sounds more like a technique from Guantanamo Bay than an allotment
in Oxfordshire.

There was a reported quote from that trial, he complained:
"Everyone's talking in French and I can't understand what is being said!"

KF with knobs on - excellent!
Talking of which, I had a chat with drother last week where he imparted
3 bits of good news:

1. The A&E registrar son who was on TV recently (umra passim)
interviewed for a Consultant post at the same hospital, and despite
other more senior applicants he got the job. Since the TV show was
filmed in 2023 he has worked as the medic in the Helicopter Flying
Doctor operation out of Nottingham I think, and he is off on a
secondment to Australia for a year with with and children, so will have
a nice job to come back to.

2. Drother's partner's youngest son and his partner have announced that
she is expecting.

3. "And I'll give you £20M if you can guess what Tote's next job is ?"
Tote is another son who works in conservation in Scotland and is very
left wing like drother (NTTAWWT).
"An agent for the Reform party ?" "No, even more unlikely"
"Ecology adviser for Trump's Scottish golf courses?"
"No, he has funding for a 1 year secondment to increase the population
of the Slavonian Grebe"

LOL
