No. Part of my pain has been reduced by the information that the writer
of last week's episodes over which I have raised complaints in the past
has now departed the writing team so I am anticipating that overall the
average quality will improve.

Until the editor removes his head from wherever it is stuck and
recognises the need to put Archers front and centre I will continue to
struggle. I am so fed up of Horrobins, Grundies and Felpersham riots
(as if) that it cannot be soon enough.

Since when has listening and talking about TA been a necessity for

We live in a village in the hills about 10 minutes away from the Limassol coast.
Supposedly the tomato capital of the island. It is "rural "yet we are overlooked on all
sides, no privacy at all. There is a flock of goats nearby, we often hear their bells and
see them grazing round about our house. The goatherd uses a Suzuki jeep to round them up
and has never yet given/sold us any of the halloumi he promises us he makes. Otherwise,
our next door neighbour uses slurry on his garden so the evening scents are delightful.
There is a South African lady in our village who uses hydroponics to grow lovely salads,
microgreens, herbs and edible flowers in a container. She delivers these, along with eggs
from her own hens, whenever we ask her for them.
We have been here 4 years now and so far the only (just) completed project is the
swimming-pool. We are waiting on various permissions to build a garage and extend the
bungalow, which is too small for the two of us and our quite large rescue dog (we think
he's a Malinois/German Shepherd cross. We know he's mad.) The bungalow itself drives me
potty as it slopes (the first time I came inside the house was two years after we bought
it. I would not have agreed to the purchase had I known. Nobody else had noticed the
slope. Neighbours tell us all the houses round here slope, it's normal.).
The weather has been so hot and dry in the past year that the reservoirs are almost empty
and there is a water shortage. Winter is finally arriving here this week, long sleeves are
needed in the evenings. It has been hot and sunny here since March. I think we've had two
thunderstorms and concomitant power cuts since then.
I can't do much as I have chronic pain and difficulty walking or doing anything else,
really. Audible is my friend.
That's it, really, extremely dull. I bet you're not glad you asked!

A modest slope can be handy.
When our kitchen used to flood[1] we discovered the floor sloped down
towards the door - which was a great help in encouraging the gallon a
minute flow to leave home.

[1] Hasn't done it for the last ten years or so, so I'm hopeful.

You are so lucky to be so close to family - I must admit that some part of my unhappiness
here is down to the fact we are so far away from dorter, who is currently in the process
of buying a house in Manchester, with her boyfriend. Covid meant we didn't see her between
her Master's graduation ceremony in early December 2019, and early July 2021 and now her
work commitments and generally living her life mean we don't see a great deal more of her
than we did when she was studying in England when we were living in Dubai. Also, my
inability to travel comfortably by plane doesn't help, it must be said, as if I were fit,
I would happily take myself off to Manchester for long week-ends and leave G behind to
look after our dog, Juke (whom he prioritises over dorter!). As it is, I can't travel by
myself, so we are lucky that we still have a little pied à terre in Athens which means we
break the journey to Manchester and back by staying there to see our friends. We're off
there shortly and I hope the weather in northern England won't be too bad - we've been
lucky other Novembers in that it's been cold but crisp and not rainy! The past couple of
Christmases we've spent in Athens with dorter and her boyf but this year they will be
staying in England with his family, as is only fair, so I am feeling at a particular loose
end as we have no plans for Christmas this year, and G is always reluctant to leave Juke
behind for long, so I doubt we'll be going anywhere after our last flight with the dog.
Thereby hangs a tale. For those of you who don't see me on FB, in February this year, we
travelled back from Athens to Larnaca (a relatively short flight), with Juke in the cargo
hold. The flight was uneventful, I was at the front of the plane because of my broken foot
and G was at the back as he won't pay extra for more leg room. G took a very long time to
get to the front of the plane where I was waiting for him and he immediately abandoned me
as there had been an announcement in Greek asking for the owner of the dog in the cargo
hold to make themselves known to the ground crew. It transpired that Juke, who on previous
flights had been heard barking his disgust with his lot for the whole flight but this time
was noticeably quiet, had spent his time studiously working his way out of his crate and
was holding the baggage handlers hostage as by the time we landed, he had made his way
through the luggage to the netting at the hold door and was barking furiously. He was as
good as gold when G arrived to rescue him (or rather, rescue the baggage-handlers), but
though some family members who heard the tale consider him a legend in his own lifetime, I
have a feeling he'll be on the same banned list as terrorist groups from now on and I'm
loath to try getting him on a flight any time soon! Happy days!

Obviously far more entertaining told now that it seemed at the time I am
sure.

And far more entertaining than any of my recent flights which seem to
have some of the laziest crew in the world.

Whatever the airlines version of Passenger Assist might be your friend, but
it’s definitely ropey, and it doesn’t matter if you’re Tanni Grey-Thompson
or Frank Gardner or Joe Bloggs: some or most airliners cock up the system
one way or another. Just the first two can shout more than Joe Bloggs.

Many years ago now when Steph was wheelchair bound we found it very
helpful to manage one or maybe two trips before it was impossible.

That's it, really, extremely dull. I bet you're not glad you asked!
I think life is turning dull more generally. Been retired over 10 years
now and at the very moment we should be on holiday in Jordan. However
the travel company (very small operator, well respected) decided that
the risks of being there and the air space getting closed due to the
ongoing war like activities in the area generally meant that they were
not running the tour - I cannot say I blame them - but of course the
consequence is that there are few tourists in the country at the moment
and you can get pictures at Petra with no people in them!

Come Christmas we were booked to go to Egypt but the good lady wife felt
nervous about that and as she was insured could cancel at a cost of £300
and we now have a holiday booked in Italy and Austria where the amount
of sun we shall see (the point of going to Egypt) will be reduced by
around 90%. This is the second Egyptian holiday which has been
cancelled on us. Not as bad as Rome where three trips have been aborted
for various reasons. I shall never see the Papal city again.

Going out locally is nearly as bad as I can almost guarantee road works
- a recent trip to Southampton was going so well until I remembered that
the rat run I have used for 50 years has inexplicably been closed off so
I now have to turn left at a set of traffic lights and suddenly there is
no right turn and the route to my destination is now over a rail level
crossing that is so busy the cars get across two or three at a time -
and that is only one excursion. Not to mention a train trip on Tuesday
where the outcome is for two applications for money back from Delay Repay!

At least you have the sun!!

Hi, Brritski! I'm afraid I've nothing useful to say, I stopped listening ages ago. Somehow
I feel further away from life in the UK, as manifested on these threads, since living in
Cyprus, or maybe the combination of Covid and Brexit have made the difference. Anyway, I
find I have very little to contribute nowadays.

When did that ever stop anyone ? ;)

The occasional (at least) report on life in Cyprus (and other topics,
food, family, travel, etc.) would be of interest to all I'm sure...

I have nothing to say except I dislike it here immensely and really, really, really, miss
Dubai.
I have tried to write more but it descends into a moany unhappy rant so I won't bother.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Would like to hear your thoughts on Dubai. I
spent a lot of time there between 2004 and 2013. I always found it fine, but
not particularly appealing. I prefered the vibe in Doha and Muscat. When I
lived in Kuwait I'd nip over to Dubai at weekends for a beer, obviously.

I have three friends living there now - one a pilot for Emirates, one an HR
person for Emirates, and one a teacher in a British school. From what they
tell me, Dubai's problems are magnified with the continued growth, and its
benefits are shrinking with the continued growth. I'm afraid I don't feel much
pull to visit; but I'm constantly fighting the urge to book a flight to Oman.

Curious your take.

Oh, we overlapped! Were you with Emirates yourself? G was in private aviation maintenance
and sales, using Dubai as a hub for the whole of the Middle East, Turkey and India. He
travelled a great deal and it was much better for his job that we were living there than
had we stayed in Geneva. We were there from for 10 years, from 2010 to 2020 - G retired
earlier than planned because of Covid, so we left Dubai then. The place changed
dramatically during that time and I hear from friends still there that it has changed even
more rapidly since we left. I am a born Londoner and city person at heart, which is why I
loved the city life of Dubai - the Opera House opened whilst we lived there and we got to
see Spamalot, amongst other things, which would have never have happened in Geneva or
Cyprus, unless we'd gone back to London on purpose. I think both Doha and Muscat are
quieter and more Arabic than Dubai, which I would guess is why you preferred them? But the
sea and sunshine were never far away and the main thing was that I never had to wear
tights or a winter coat all the time we lived there! I also loved the mix of all kinds of
people in Dubai. The scent of Oud in the Malls. Emirati men in flowing white robes and
women in black abayas covering up the latest in expensive fashion. The abras and the
souks. The calls to prayer 5 times a day, and people stopping on the side of the Al-Khail
road during rush hour to take out their prayer mats and face Mecca for Mahgrib.
Eye-opening. Obviously, and probably the foremost reason I enjoyed Dubai, was that we had
a much better income and thus standard of living whilst we were there than we have had
before or since. We were very lucky in the timing. To be blunt, I was spoilt. A beautiful
large house and garden, cars, meals out, holidays, cleaning ladies, shopping (malls not
really my thing, but a much better choice of food from all over the world than in
supermarkets here or even Switzerland), extremely good health care if you were insured and
found the right doctors. A lot more happening there than anywhere else I've lived apart
from in England. Though I do remember one day I came home in my gas-guzzler and felt like
a Stepford wife as I missed our driveway and only realised I'd gone too far because I
tried to turn into a house with the wrong coloured car.. Other than that, we were able to
afford to send our daughter to a private school where she studied the International
Baccalaureate and as a result, got into a good English university, which would definitely
not have happened had she stayed in the state system in Geneva. That was huge, as she had
been going off the rails in Geneva and probably wouldn't have done as well academically as
she did if we'd stayed there. She hated Dubai, and us for moving there, though, and left
as soon as she was able to, but I think she will say now that she benefited a lot from
being exposed to people from so many cultures, as well as academically.
The other side of the coin was the poverty and living conditions of the Moslem workers. I
volunteered to help as much as I could, though not being a Moslem myself, the help wasn't
necessarily wanted or accepted. Our daughter nearly got us deported as, aged 16, she
floated a scheme to persuade workers on construction sites to form a union in order to
fight for better health and safety, which was strictly against "local" rules. We nipped
this in the bud pretty quickly, but it was the start of her career as an anarchist and she
now works for a union herself, for minimum wage but sticking to her principles.

Thank you, Ben. The sun was out today, the skies were clear blue, I had coffee with
friends, it was fine!

Doesn’t stop me Hellerat!😉

OK. Consider yourself thoroughly (but reluctantly) ignored.
