Am I AOU in thinking that the pome at the inauguration yesterday was
trite, cliche-ridden doggerel ?

When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade
We've braved the belly of the beast
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace
And the norms and notions
of what just is
Isn't always just-ice
And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it
Somehow we do it

I see no argument in what you say at all!

Perhaps it should have been a message like this:

It has been tough, it will continue to be tough...
for some time yet, but, we can fight it and win!
Let us all pull together - and we will beat it...
Let us ban disease, distrust and war - good health and peace for all.

Sorry, I’ll go back under my stone now.

Not "great poetry", I'll grant you, but as it came from a young black woman
following recent great examples of the difference in handling of unruly
white people and (largely peaceful) black people, it was probably a fitting
welcome to the most diverse presidential staff ever seen.

That's a little harsh, I think. Perhaps more of a signal that this
administration will have a different attitude to race relations and an
attempt to begin to heal the deep wounds and rifts which have existed
for generations and seem to have been exacerbated lately?

As to the quality of the poetry - all of the inauguration poems I've
ever heard have been more or less dreadful. I certainly didn't wait to
hear it because I expected it to be cringeworthy or boring or both. The
fragment you quote didn't seem any worse than usual - which doesn't say
much for it, I agree.

This would have raised the standard:

So...hello, then,
Joe Biden.
The man elected for
Not Being Donald Trump.

At least you seem like a decent bloke
And at least you'll go with grace and in peace
If you lose the next election.

Mind you, Keith's mum says
You don't look as though you'll last a week,
Never mind four years.

Possibly right on the harshness, but I think they could have sent the
signals you mention with a bit more quality. I'd rather have had an
honest rap tbh, some of them are really clever, funny and original. Or
something more traditional.
I tuned in halfway thru Lady Gag singing the Star-spangled Banner and it
was heart stoppingly good. J-Lo was bland, and whoever sang Amazing
Grace was not the first at all, but then we recently saw the program
with Aretha singing it...
As to the quality of the poetry - all of the inauguration poems...
I never knew it was a thing...
Frost/Kennedy is spoken of still.

Frost/Kennedy is spoken of still.
In Delaware they speak of little else.

scrawled in the dust...

Am I AOU in thinking that the pome at the inauguration yesterday was
trite, cliche-ridden doggerel ?
When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade
We've braved the belly of the beast
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace
And the norms and notions
of what just is
Isn't always just-ice
And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it
Somehow we do it

[1] Kimbo, you are still missed :(
Not "great poetry", I'll grant you, but as it came from a young black woman...
So just virtue signalling then ?
That's a little harsh, I think.  Perhaps more of a signal that this
administration will have a different attitude to race relations and an
attempt to begin to heal the deep wounds and rifts which have existed
for generations and seem to have been exacerbated lately?
Possibly right on the harshness, but I think they could have sent the
signals you mention with a bit more quality. I'd rather have had an
honest rap tbh, some of them are really clever, funny and original. Or
something more traditional.
I tuned in halfway thru Lady Gag singing the Star-spangled Banner and it
was heart stoppingly good. J-Lo was bland, and whoever sang Amazing
Grace was not the first at all, but then we recently saw the program
with Aretha singing it...
As to the quality of the poetry - all of the inauguration poems...
I never knew it was a thing...

If someone were to suggest that poor poetry was acceptable if it came
from a middle-aged white man, that would be called sexist and racist.

following recent great examples of the difference in handling of unruly
white people and (largely peaceful) black people, it was probably a fitting
welcome to the most diverse presidential staff ever seen.

recognized as one of the villains of this century, in order to
induce him to a negative judgment, he replied: "My situation is
so different from his, that it is not for me to pass judgment".

It had some flashes of moderately good poetry, some OK rap (like the
just is/justice lines you quote) and quite long stretches of prose with
line breaks.

If you dig through the output of British Poets Laureate, when a bespoke
poem is demanded of them for some august occasion, the results tend to
be 'mixed' (to be kind about it).

Where are you now, William Topaz McGonagall ?

Along with the very last Tern, ‘Never leave a Tern un-stoned’.

Or Alfred Austin (allegedly):

O'er the wires the electric message came,
"He is no better; he is much the same."

I loved it. But maybe I'm just undereducated in the realm of poetry [0]

[0] A friend who has published three or four books of poetry sent a Christmas card with a poem in it. I didn't really understand it.
