I had long hoped that the 1998 BBC West documentary "New Labour, New
Woman" had been buried in a secure container somewhere deep underneath
the Mendips many years ago. However, I have been made aware that it has
now emerged into the public domain.
I've come a long way since then and I'm quite sure it would make me
cringe, so I won't be watching it. But if anybody is interested, feel free, it's at
I'm hoping that this is the original, unexpurgated, version shown on
Points West and not the version shown on BBC2 a few months later from
which, no doubt at the behest of the Labour Party, the scene in which
Cllr Mervyn Hulin (not one of my admiring fans even before this
happened) grabs the presenter by the lapels and pins him against a
pillar.
IIRC it shows me going to speech therapy, the hairdresser, dancing
classes (learning to do the other steps) and shopping, as well as some
so-called colleagues making twats of themselves.
