knickerflash coming up...

My brilliant sister, Caroline Jaquet, will be on In Touch tomorrow (or
possibly next week, depending on politics) talking to Peter White about
what she does: she's the chair of the Audio Description Association
Scotland, and describes theatre, opera, musicals - and Taylor Swift -
for those who can't see the stage. Please listen if you have sight
issues and tell any friends you have who do. It's available in so many
theatres and venues but not widely enough publicised.

A very fine knickerflash indeed. If I don't manage to catch it
tomorrow, I'll try and listen on Sunday morning.

Your brilliant sister is erme... brilliant, isn't she? With all the
knock-on benefits, let's hope the concept takes off in a bigger way.

I feel sure it will because these are the big named style events.
Hopefully UK wide. But unlikely to travel well, unless pre-recorded as in
films.

Caroline's crew (Audio Description Assocation of Scotland) don't
pre-record anything, it's all live, as she says. They do a lot of work
in advance, either watching tapes of the shows or earlier performances,
so as to be able to write their own scripts. The Association has a lot
of describers with different expertises - they do opera and ballet as
well as musicals and straight theatre.

She is very interesting on the difference between a Swift-type show,
where everything is choreographed to the nth degree with hardly any room
for improvisation, and a Pink-type show which is much less thoroughly
scripted. I hadn't realised this type of arena show description doesn't
happen in the rest of the UK. You need a lot of co-operation from venue
and artists, perhaps that's more difficult to arrange in England?
